How does corten steel age and develop its patina?
Newly made corten steel is gray and shiny. If the corten steel is contained outdoors, it will change color to reddish brown before it darkens even more. It is the effect of rain and moisture that gives the steel its rusty surface and depending on the surrounding conditions, this normally takes about 1-5 weeks.
During the first year, while the rust layer is being formed, the product can leave stains of rust on other materials that come into contact with the steel, for example on wood. This can be brushed off with a metal brush.
After approximately 1 year will the corten steel hardly emit rust anymore
How do I choose the right outdoor fire pit?
It depends on what you want to do. If you want ambience and simple grilling, a fire bowl or fire basket like Lillhälla suits well. If you also want to bake, grill and cook properly, a wood-fired oven like Faster Greta is a better choice.
Material matters. Corten steel lasts for decades and needs no maintenance. Thin sheet metal rusts through after a few seasons. Cast iron holds up well but is heavy to move. Consider size in relation to your garden and how often you plan to light the fire.
What can you cook in a wood-fired outdoor oven?
Lots of things! Pizza, bread, gratins, steaks and slow cooker - basically everything you can do in a regular oven. But Faster Greta is not only a baking oven, the lower part is also a grill. So when the fire has burned down, you simply push in the included grill grate and take care of the embers!
How long does it take a wood-fired oven to reach pizza temperature?
It depends on what to cook, but we usually say about an hour to get up to a good pizza temperature. There are also nice thermometers to buy that you can set in the oven part if you want a detailed check of the heat.
How long does it take to heat a wood-fired pizza oven?
In the Faster Greta it takes 45 to 60 minutes to reach pizza temperature, 300 to 400 degrees. It depends on the type of wood, the amount and the outdoor temperature.
Start with kindling and firelighters. Build the fire gradually. Use dry birch or beech for the best results. You know the oven is ready when the stones in the oven section have turned light grey. That means they have stored enough heat to bake pizza in two to four minutes.
Can I have Faster Greta on a terrace?
Faster Greta is made to stand free outdoors. We have many customers who use it on the terrace, but it is at your own risk. If you place it on the terrace, you should think about laying paving stones or concrete slabs underneath (4 pcs 50x50cm), and always have it well insulated around Faster Greta as it emits radiant heat, on all sides. Common sense and caution should prevail.
Can you cook things other than pizza in a wood-fired pizza oven?
Much more. Faster Greta is really a wood-fired all-round oven. Bread, focaccia, gratins, whole roast chicken, root vegetables, even dessert. Anything that works in a regular oven works here, with the addition of wood smoke flavour.
The key is to use the oven's temperature curve. Pizza first, at the highest heat. Then bread and gratins when the temperature has dropped to 200 to 250 degrees. Finally slow cooking and drying in the residual heat. One firing session can provide food for the whole day.
Does Faster Greta work as a fireplace?
It works great as a fireplace! Start by removing both doors before firing. Sitting around a crackling fire with good friends on a cold autumn evening is magical. With our baking oven Faster Greta, there will simply be more time for outdoor enjoyment in autumn and winter.
Where should I place my wood-fired pizza oven outdoors?
Choose a flat, stable and fireproof surface. Concrete, paving stones or natural stone work well. Avoid wooden decks without extra protection. Faster Greta weighs roughly 135 kilos, so the surface needs to support the weight without giving way.
Keep at least one metre from combustible materials. Never place the oven under a roof, pergola or tree branches. Think about wind direction. You do not want smoke blowing straight at the dinner table or towards your neighbour's terrace. And think practically: keep firewood, water and ingredients close at hand.
Does a corten steel outdoor oven require much maintenance?
No, on the contrary. Because it is made of corten steel, it can withstand being outside all year round, in all kinds of weather. The only thing you basically need to do is empty the stove part from coal and soot a little now and then, and brush the stones in the oven part with a wire brush when they get dirty.
What dough works best in a wood-fired pizza oven?
A simple dough with flour, water, salt, olive oil and yeast. Nothing remarkable. What makes the difference is letting the dough rise for a long time, preferably 24 hours in the fridge. It gives better flavour and a dough that handles the high heat without burning.
Use pizza flour (tipo 00) if you can find it. It gives a supple, elastic dough that rolls thin and bakes quickly. Roll it thin. In a wood-fired oven like Faster Greta the pizza bakes in two to four minutes. Thick dough will not cook through before the top burns.
Is it difficult to move Faster Greta?
It is not difficult, but it requires two people. The first thing you do is remove all loose parts - doors, stones, plates, etc. Then you lift it in the round bars that sit on each side. Once the corten steel has gained its patina, it colors easily, so wear clothes that are durable.
How do I clean and maintain a wood-fired pizza oven?
Let the oven cool completely. Brush out ash from the firebox with an ash scoop. Brush the pizza stone with a wire brush while it is still slightly warm. Food residue usually burns off from the heat, but stubborn spots come off with the brush.
Faster Greta is made from corten steel that needs no maintenance. The patina protects the surface. Never use water or detergent on the hot stones. They can crack from the temperature difference. Beyond that, it is essentially maintenance-free. The same material, year after year.
Can a wood-fired pizza oven stand outside in rain and bad weather?
Faster Greta is built in corten steel and designed to stand outdoors year-round. Rain, snow and frost do no damage. The patina that forms on the corten steel is exactly what protects the oven from rusting through.
You can bake in rain if you want to. The oven gets hot enough that the rain does not affect cooking. Some people use a roof or awning for comfort, but the oven itself needs no protection. Avoid covering it with a tight tarpaulin that traps moisture, though. Corten steel wants to breathe.
How often do you need to brush Faster Greta with oil if you want the oven to remain black?
About 3-4 times a year. It depends on the climate where you live, so you have to keep an eye on it.
Brush the oven with rapeseed oil or raw linseed oil (raw linseed oil can be a bit stickier than rapeseed oil). When you have oiled it, you heat up the oven so that the oil etches on. Then it will become like a film on the steel.
If you do not use Faster Greta for a longer period, you can wrap the oven in a tarpaulin.
How do I control the temperature in Faster Greta?
The temperature in Faster Greta is controlled by the airflow through the firebox door and the chimney hat:
- Firebox door: The wider you open the door, the more air enters and the hotter the fire burns. Close it almost completely to lower the temperature and save firewood.
- Ashtray: Flip the ashtray upside down if you want even more airflow from below – this creates a more intense burn.
- Chimney hat: Open the chimney hat fully for maximum draught. Close it partially to slow down heat loss through the chimney.
A good tip is to fire up the oven with the door and chimney open, then close them down once you have reached your desired temperature. Use an oven thermometer for precise control.
How do I bake perfect pizza in a wood-fired outdoor oven?
Heat the oven to 300 to 400 degrees. In the Faster Greta it takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Flour the pizza stone well. Roll thin bases. They bake in two to four minutes. Rotate the pizza halfway. Have all your ingredients ready before you start, close to the oven. It should go fast once the oven is hot. The wood smoke gives the pizza a flavour no regular oven can match. That is the real difference.
A good pizza starts with the dough. We have a simple base recipe for slow-rise pizza dough that gives really good results, especially in a wood fired oven like Faster Greta.
How do I get a smoky flavour on food in Faster Greta?
Faster Greta has built-in smoke channels on the sides that you can use to infuse your food with a delicious smoky flavour:
- Open the smoke channels (the small hatches on the sides of the oven) so that smoke is directed into the oven chamber
- Partially close the chimney hat to force the smoke to linger longer in the oven space
- The combination of open smoke channels and a half-closed chimney gives the best smoke effect
Keep in mind that smoking works best at lower temperatures – use wood that produces good smoke, such as fruit woods like apple or cherry. Experiment with how much you open the smoke channels to find the flavour you prefer.
Can you bake bread in a wood-fired outdoor oven?
Wood-fired ovens like Faster Greta are excellent for bread. Bake at a lower temperature than pizza, around 200 to 250 degrees. Heat the oven first and let it come down to the right level. Sourdough, focaccia, flatbread, everything gets its own character from the wood smoke. Place a bowl of water inside for steam, it gives a crisp crust. Allow 30 to 45 minutes depending on size.
How do I use the pizza stone in Faster Greta?
The pizza stone is an accessory that sits on top of the built-in stones in the oven section. It protects the stones underneath and provides even heat for a perfect pizza base:
- Oil the pizza stone with cooking oil before first use
- Place the stone in the oven section on top of the existing stones
- Fire up the oven to a high temperature – for pizza you want at least 300–400°C
- For maximum temperature, you can remove the heat shield (the metal plate between the firebox and the oven) – this allows heat to radiate directly up towards the pizza stone
The pizza stone retains heat well, so you can bake several pizzas in a row. Brush the stone with a wire brush after use.
Can I cook on multiple levels in Faster Greta?
Yes! Faster Greta comes with an oven tray that lets you cook on two levels at the same time in the oven section:
- The lower level is the stones – perfect for bread, pizza and gratins that need direct contact heat from below
- The upper level is the oven tray – great for side dishes, desserts or extra portions
- Oil the oven tray with cooking oil before first use so food does not stick
Keep in mind that the lower level is hotter than the upper one, so plan your cooking accordingly. By using both levels you can prepare a full dinner for the group all at once.
How do I deep-clean the heat shield and soot in Faster Greta?
Beyond regular cleaning (emptying ash and brushing stones), Faster Greta needs a more thorough clean from time to time – especially if you notice heavy soot build-up:
Remove the heat shield
- The heat shield sits between the firebox and the oven section. It can become stuck due to soot and heat
- Use a wedge and hammer to carefully loosen it if it is stuck
- Lift out the heat shield and brush it clean with a wire brush
Clean behind the heat shield
- With the heat shield removed, you can access and scrape away soot deposits from the inside
- Brush around the smoke channels on the sides
- Check that nothing is blocking the airflow
Clean under the firebox
- Remove the bottom plate under the firebox
- Brush away ash and soot that has collected beneath the grate
- Reassemble everything in reverse order
We recommend this type of thorough cleaning at least once per season, or more often if you use the oven frequently.
What safety rules apply when using Faster Greta?
Faster Greta gets very hot during use. Follow these safety guidelines for safe operation:
- Children: Always supervise children near the oven. All exterior surfaces become hot during firing
- Hot surfaces: Always use oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves when handling doors, trays and grill grates
- Water bucket: Always keep a bucket of water nearby as a safety precaution
- Combustible materials: Maintain at least 1 metre distance to combustible materials around the oven
- Ash disposal: Empty ash into a metal bucket – never into a plastic bucket or waste bin. Ash can remain hot for several days
- Surface: Place the oven on a non-combustible surface such as concrete slabs or paving stones
Use common sense and never leave a burning oven unattended.

What is the difference between a wood-fired and an electric hot tub?
A wood-fired bathtub like Bohemen is heated with real fire. You need no electrical connection, no fixed installation. Place it where you want it, fill with water, and light the fire. Heating takes roughly two hours. An electric hot tub requires power, installation and has higher running costs. But above all, it lacks what makes the outdoor bath an experience: the fire, the scent, the feeling that everything takes the time it takes.
Why choose a wood-fired bathtub over a hot tub?
If you prefer to take a bath with your partner, friend or alone, a wood-fired bathtub is the best choice since it has fast heating and requires less water than a hot tub, you don't have to plan far in advance when to take a bath. Little effort and the joy of being spontaneous allows you to use it often. Our customers also highlight the minimal maintenance of bathtubs and durability as crucial factors in choosing between a wood-fired bathtub or the bigger hot tub. It should also be added that our customers value the design as well! And that makes us very happy.
Where should I place my wood-fired bathtub?
Choose a flat, stable surface. Stone slabs, concrete or compacted gravel work well. Avoid wooden decks without extra fire protection beneath the tub. Make sure there is good ventilation around the stove and at least one metre from combustible materials. Think about where you have water for filling and draining. Bohemen weighs roughly 55 kilos empty and is easily carried by two people, so you can move it with the seasons and your mood.
Does the metal get so hot that you risk burning yourself?
No, no danger. The metal in the bathtub never gets hotter than the water. The stove pipe, on the other hand, gets hot, so we have equipped it with a heat protection.
How do I maintain a wood-fired bathtub?
Empty and rinse the tub after each bath with a soft brush and clean water. Wash the inside with a mild detergent when needed. Clear the stove of ash. Check that the drain works as it should. Bohemen is made from stainless steel and corten steel, materials that handle weather year after year. Compared to wooden tubs that need oiling and can crack, the maintenance is minimal.
Can I place a wood-fired bathtub on my terrace or deck?
Yes, it is ok because the stove is inside the tub. However, be sure to place it on sturdy, load-bearing joists - the tub filled with water and bath can weigh around 850kg.
Also make sure to prepare where the water will be released after a bath.
If the water takes on a yellowish-brown tone after the first bath: empty the tub and clean it thoroughly. On delivery, the tub's wooden details are oiled with raw linseed oil, which is washed out under water. The oil in combination with the wood's natural pigments can slightly color the water, something that diminishes with each use. Therefore, do not leave water in the tub after use for the first few baths.
Please note! Natural pigments can release from the oak interior and frame when the tub is new, even before it has been filled with water the first few times. It can cause discoloration under the tub if it is placed on a light surface, such as light-colored tiles or a light-colored wooden deck. Our recommendation is therefore to place the tub on a non-damaging surface the first few times the tub is filled with water to ensure that no discoloration occurs.
How long does it take to heat a wood-fired bathtub?
With Bohemen it takes roughly two hours to reach 38 to 40 degrees. It varies with the outdoor temperature and how cold the water is to begin with. In winter it may take a little longer.
Use dry birch wood for the fastest heating. Stir the water at regular intervals so the heat distributes evenly. Think of the heating as part of the evening, not an obstacle. Light the stove, watch the fire burn down, go out and enjoy. It is not time you lose. It is time you gain.
Can I connect a water filter to the Bohemen bathtub?
Yes, the Bohemen has two connections on the back that allow you to run water out to a filter and return clean water back into the tub.
Over-the-edge water filters are available if you want to reuse the same water for up to a week. The filter removes particles and debris but not bacteria - for that you need salt tablets. Do not use chlorine as it may discolour the aluminium.
Can I filter and reuse the water in a wood-fired bathtub?
Bohemen has two connections on the back , it is so that you can direct the water to a sand filter and lead fresh water back into the tub. See how to do the installation in the Bohemen manual
Water filtration placed over the edge of the tub is available, if you want to use the same water for a whole week. The filter removes particles and debris but not bacteria, for that you need to add salt tablets. Do not use chlorine in the water as it may discolor the aluminium. Hikki does not sell filters but they are available at spa shops.
How can I treat the water in the Bohemen without using chlorine?
Bohemen is made from marine-grade aluminium (alloy 5754) with a wooden interior. When the tub is new, the aluminium surface is shiny and more sensitive to corrosion. For that reason, we recommend that you do not keep the same water for more than 2 days during the first year – even if you use water treatment.
Over time, aluminium develops a natural oxide layer that protects it from corrosion – especially when it is exposed to outdoor weather while dry. This gives it both a characteristic look and long-term durability.
If you wish to keep the same water longer than 2 days, it must be continuously circulated through a filter pump to prevent discolouration on the submerged aluminium and to keep the water clean.
💧 If you don’t have circulation (max 2 days):
- Use a mild, chlorine-free disinfectant (e.g. active oxygen or MyWater Spa Cleaner)
- Dose according to instructions for 500–600 litres
- Remove debris manually with a net or strainer
- Try to keep pH between 7.0 and 7.4
- Always shower before bathing to help keep the water fresh
- Drain the tub after max 2 days, especially when new
🔁 If you have a circulation pump (max 7 days):
- Use active oxygen + activator (e.g. SpaCare Oxybox) or bromine tablets in a floating dispenser (e.g. Planet Spa Brom Tabs)
- Let the water circulate for several hours each day
- Clean the filter as needed and maintain pH 7.0–7.4
- Always shower before bathing
- Watch for white spots or signs of discolouration on the metal
- Drain the tub after max 7 days
🌊 If you use lake or seawater
Natural water contains more microorganisms. We recommend you drain the tub immediately after each use if you fill it with lake or seawater.
🧼 Aftercare for the wooden interior:
- Clean the wooden parts thoroughly with soap and a stiff brush
- Let the wood dry slowly in a cool, dark space – preferably an unheated storage room
- After cleaning: Avoid drying wet wooden parts in direct sunlight or warmth, as this may cause cracks
🛠 Tips:
- Use water treatment sparingly and follow dosing instructions carefully
- Make sure the product is compatible with aluminium
- When in doubt – drain and refill with fresh water
- When not in use, leave the tub empty and dry outdoors to allow the aluminium to build its natural protective surface
What is the difference between a round hot tub and a rectangular outdoor bathtub?
Round wooden hot tubs are the traditional shape. They often fit four to six people and take longer to heat. They require more upkeep: oiling, sealing, sometimes replacing staves.
Bohemen is a rectangular outdoor bathtub in aluminium and corten steel. It fits one to two people, heats faster, is easier to drain and needs minimal maintenance. The shape makes it simpler to place on a terrace or in a corner of the garden. It is a different way to bathe. More personal, more spontaneous.
How do I protect the aluminium in a wood-fired bathtub from corrosion?
The Bohemen is made from marine-grade aluminium (alloy 5754) with a wooden interior. When the tub is new, the aluminium surface is shiny and more sensitive to corrosion. For that reason, do not keep the same water for more than 2 days during the first year - even with water treatment.
Over time, aluminium develops a natural oxide layer that protects it from corrosion - especially when it is exposed to outdoor weather while dry. This gives it both a characteristic look and long-term durability.
If you wish to keep the same water longer than 2 days, it must be continuously circulated through a filter pump to prevent discolouration on the submerged aluminium.
When not in use, leave the tub empty and dry outdoors to allow the aluminium to build its natural protective surface.
How much water does a wood-fired bathtub need?
Bohemen holds roughly 250 litres. That is half of what many round hot tubs require. Less water means faster heating and less firewood.
If you drain the tub after each bath, a garden hose is enough for refilling. The water can be drained onto the lawn if you have not used chemicals. If you want to keep the water longer, up to a week, you can use a water filter and salt tablets.
How do I keep wood-fired hot tub water clean without a circulation pump?
Without a circulation pump, you should drain and refill the water after a maximum of 2 days, especially when the tub is new. Here are our tips:
- Use a mild, chlorine-free disinfectant (e.g. active oxygen or MyWater Spa Cleaner)
- Dose according to instructions for 500–600 litres
- Remove debris manually with a net or strainer
- Try to keep pH between 7.0 and 7.4
- Always shower before bathing to help keep the water fresh
- Drain the tub after max 2 days, especially when new
Always check that your water treatment product is safe to use with aluminium. When in doubt - drain and refill with fresh water.
Can you ice bathe outdoors in winter in Sweden?
Winter is peak season. Many people bathe in lakes and the sea, or in their own outdoor bathtub at home. With Bohemen you have full control. Fill with cold tap water, or let the natural cold do the work. You can also heat the tub for a warm bath and then let it cool to ice bath temperature. That contrast between warm and cold, that is where the whole experience lives.
Can I use a wood-fired bathtub in winter?
Yes, and winter is peak season. Few things beat a warm outdoor bath when it is cold and dark. Bohemen is built to handle Swedish winters.
Expect heating to take a little longer in sub-zero temperatures. Fill with lukewarm water if you can, it speeds up the process. Do not leave water standing in the tub if there is risk of deep frost when you are not heating. Drain and turn the tub over, or make sure the stove keeps the water above freezing.
How do I maintain hot tub water quality with a circulation pump?
With a circulation pump, you can keep the same water for up to 7 days. Here is how:
- Use active oxygen + activator (e.g. SpaCare Oxybox) or bromine tablets in a floating dispenser (e.g. Planet Spa Brom Tabs)
- Let the water circulate for several hours each day
- Clean the filter as needed and maintain pH 7.0–7.4
- Always shower before bathing
- Watch for white spots or signs of discolouration on the metal
- Drain the tub after max 7 days
Follow dosing instructions carefully and make sure the product is compatible with aluminium.
What does it cost to run a wood-fired bathtub compared to an electric one?
The running cost of a wood-fired bathtub is essentially just firewood. One bath in Bohemen requires roughly 5 to 7 kilos of dry wood. If you have access to your own firewood, it costs practically nothing.
An electric hot tub draws a lot of power, especially to keep the water warm between baths. With current electricity prices, it can add up to thousands of kronor per month. A wood-fired solution has no fixed running cost, no pumps that can break, no electrical installation. You pay for wood and get fire as a bonus.
Can I fill a wood-fired bathtub with lake water or seawater?
Yes, you can fill the Bohemen with lake or seawater. However, natural water contains more microorganisms than tap water, which means it does not stay fresh as long.
We recommend that you always drain the tub immediately after each use when filling it with lake or seawater.
What gives the best effect - cold bathing or sauna?
They are good on their own, but best together. The Nordic tradition of contrast bathing, hot sauna followed by a cold dip, that is something quite special. The blood rushes, the body wakes. Cold bathing strengthens above all the mental resilience. Sauna is more relaxing. With a Bohemen outdoor bathtub you can do both. Heat the water, bathe warm. Let it cool, bathe cold. Or the other way round.
How long does the water stay warm in a wood-fired bathtub?
In Bohemen the water stays comfortably warm for roughly one to two hours after you stop heating, depending on the outdoor temperature. Summer evenings it lasts longer. Cold winter days the temperature drops faster.
You can keep heating during the bath to maintain the temperature. The stove sits inside the tub, so you control the heat yourself. Stir the water now and then, especially near the stove. The water there can get warmer than in the rest of the tub.
How do I care for the wooden interior of a wood-fired bathtub?
The wooden interior of the Bohemen needs regular cleaning to stay in good condition. Here is how:
- Clean the wooden parts thoroughly with soap and a stiff brush
- Let the wood dry slowly in a cool, dark space - preferably an unheated storage room
- After cleaning, avoid drying wet wooden parts in direct sunlight or warmth, as this may cause cracks
Can you cold bathe all year round?
Absolutely. In summer you bathe in lakes and the sea, or fill your Bohemen outdoor bathtub with cold tap water. In winter the cold takes care of itself. Many people actually prefer winter. Cold air, cold water, it creates a more intense experience. The key is to keep at it. Start during the warmer months, continue through autumn, and suddenly you are standing there in January wondering what you were afraid of.
How do I maintain the wooden interior?
In two ways: not at all , or with crude linseed oil at regular intervals. If you do not oil the oak, it will eventually have a beautiful silver-gray color, and with oiling it retains its brownish-yellow color.
Your bathtub's interior is oiled with raw linseed oil upon delivery to you. It is entirely on your own responsibility if you want to try another vegetable oil. Remember to wipe off any oil that get on the aluminium as it can cause stains if allowed to dry. Clean the wooden interior with soapy water and a soft brush.
Allow the interior to dry completely before you apply oil. Make sure to oil the end wood of the wooden ribs thoroughly. The humidity depends on where in the country you live. You've probably gained an insight into it by seeing how the growth of organisms is on for example your outdoor furniture. You can grind away dark spots that occur on the interior of your bathtub and then apply oil. Some customers prefer that the wooden interior have a rustic character and if so, do not use any oil. Then it becomes completely silvery gray over time.
How long does it take to heat a wood-fired outdoor bathtub?
About 1,5 hours in summer and 2,5 in winter. If you use the accesoires Vinterpäls and Eldvakt, you shorten the heating time in winter by about 30%.
If you start with a water temperature of about 8 degrees it takes around 80-90 minutes. That's from spring to autumn. Winter time from 4-degree water takes about 120 – 140 minutes. It is good to use the accesoire Eldvakt and Vinterpäls to shorten the heating time.
We have bathed when it has been-20 degrees without any problems, but you should wear a hat.
You need around 30 liters (10 kg) of firewood for a bath during the warmer season, a sack of firewood of the kind you find out in the shops. Wood from hardwood works best, preferably high quality dry birch wood.
How to get the right temperature in the water?
Stir in the water at regular intervals while heating the tub. Measure the temperature with a bath thermometer. Stop fire when you have reached about 36 degrees and keep the fire at a level that maintains the heat. If it gets too hot, you can close the air supply to the stove. A comfortable bathing temperature is about 40 degrees. It's a good idea to use the stick for Bohemen when stirring the tub.
Is there a lid or cover?
Yes there is cover for Bohemen in strong and durable marine textiles.
The cover Regntyg prevents falling leaves, debris and rainwater from ending up in the bathtub. Regntyg is made of heavy-duty marine textile that is water- and dirt repellent. The cover is held in place by velcro at the corners and sides and the hexagonal wooden stick that holds the Bohemen backrest in place making a ridge when threaded through the cover, causing the water to drain instead of collect in puddles.
How do I empty the water after bathing?
You connect a hose to the flange of the tap hole and divert the water to the appropriate drain. Check with your municipality what is best suited where you live. If you have your wood-burning bathtub on the countryside, you can let the water out on the lawn or drag the water to a ditch.
Find instructions how to attach a hose to the taphole in the Bohemen manual
Can I move my wood-burning bathtub?
Bohemen is easy to move if you want to take your bath somewhere else. Remove all equipment from the tub to make it easier. Two people can easily carry an aluminum bathtub for a shorter distance. You can hardly do that with a hot tub!
How do I winterize and store my outdoor bathtub?
It is of course possible to use it during the winter. If you want to winter store the tub, remove all loose parts. Oil the wooden frame with for example teak oil. Wipe off any spillage that drip on the aluminium. Lay out two rough wooden rails on the ground and place the tub upside down on them. Make sure that air can flow between the wooden frame of the tub and the ground. Oil the visibly exposed wood-edge of the tub. If you put a tarpaulin over the tub, you must not make a dense environment around it, it must be airy.
Clean and oil the interior after it has dried. Preferably store it in a cold storage room.
Why use aluminium instead of stainless steel for outdoor bathtubs?
We want the bathtubs to be easy to move and able to age developing their own beautiful character over the years. Over time, scratches and stains merge with the surrounding surface. Aluminium is attacked by oxidisation and when attacked, it forms a protective layer with the effect that the aluminum gets self-healing. Clean your wood-burning tub with soap and use only soft cloths or sponges that cannot scratch the plate.
When and how can you light the fire?
Bohemen has a stove inside the tub - so no open fire. If you do not know what applies to wood burning, contact your municipality's environmental and building office to find out what applies exactly where you live. Describe how you intend to fire. Keep in mind that the smoke from wood burning can be annoying to neighbors.
How is the environment affected by wood burning?
Wood and other types of bioenergy are renewable energy sources that are part of the natural cycle. Biofuels, usually wood, are renewed within a foreseeable time and when they burn, carbon dioxide that goes out via the flue gases is released. The forest grows and uses carbon dioxide to build up new biomass and the carbon cycle is closed.
Read more about firewood and wood burning in the excellent book "Ved" (available in Swedish) by author Lars Mytting.
We don't have access to wood - can we make a fire with briquettes or eco heat logs instead?
Yes, it works splendidly. Examples of websites that sell these products:
Can I heat a wood-fired bathtub with electricity or gas instead of wood?
Yes, the Bohemen can be heated in three different ways:
- Wood – the classic method, using the built-in stove. Heating time is approximately 1.5–2.5 hours depending on starting temperature.
- Electricity – a 3 kW electric immersion heater can be installed in the tub. This must be done by a qualified electrician. Heating time is longer than with wood.
- Gas – an external 36 kW gas heater can be connected. Ready-made package solutions are available online. Gas provides fast heating without smoke.
You can also combine methods - for example, pre-heat with electricity during the day and finish with wood in the evening.
Can I use a wood-fired bathtub indoors or in a greenhouse?
No, the Bohemen is designed exclusively for outdoor use. Never use the bathtub in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces such as:
- Tents or party tents
- Greenhouses
- Garages or carports
- Cabins, houses, or other buildings
Wood burning produces carbon monoxide, which is odourless and can be life-threatening in poorly ventilated spaces. The bathtub must always stand freely outdoors with good ventilation around the chimney pipe.
Is it safe to bathe with children in a wood-fired hot tub?
Children must never be left unsupervised near the bathtub - whether during or after bathing. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, even in shallow water.
Follow these guidelines:
- Children must always have an adult at their side throughout the entire bath
- Recommended water temperature for children and elderly is 35–37°C (max 40°C for adults)
- Always drain the bathtub after use so children cannot fall in
- The Bohemen does not include a thermometer - use an external pool thermometer to check the temperature
What are the fire safety rules for a wood-fired bathtub?
To use the Bohemen safely, always follow these rules:
- Never light a fire without water in the tub - the stove may warp or get damaged
- Water level must be at least 10 cm above the circulation pipes inside the stove
- Only use dry firewood - never use lighter fluid, gasoline, alcohol, or other flammable liquids
- Always use the stove lid during firing - it controls airflow and protects against sparks
- Keep flammable materials (decking, furniture, hedges) at a safe distance from the chimney
- Never move the bathtub while it contains water or fire
How do I look after the touch guard and chimney pipe on a wood-fired bathtub?
The touch guard and chimney pipe need some attention to avoid damage:
- The touch guard must never rest against the aluminium stove body or the water surface - it is made from a different alloy that can cause corrosion and discolouration through prolonged contact
- The chimney pipe should be removed when the bathtub is not in use to prevent wind damage
- Check regularly that the touch guard is properly positioned and not rubbing against the stove
How do I clean the aluminium shell of a wood-fired bathtub?
The aluminium in the Bohemen needs gentle cleaning to maintain its appearance and durability:
- Use mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge
- Never use a pressure washer - it can damage the surface
- Avoid abrasive cleaning agents and rough brushes that could scratch the aluminium
- Avoid strong chemicals and cleaning products
- Never place objects made of other metals (e.g. stainless steel) inside the tub - this can cause rust spots through galvanic corrosion
Over time, the aluminium develops a natural patina that protects the surface. This oxide layer is desirable and should not be scrubbed away.
How do I empty the ash from the stove in a wood-fired bathtub?
The stove in the Bohemen performs best when it is free of ash. Here is how to empty it:
- Make sure the stove is completely cold before you start
- Lift the stove out of the tub
- Turn it upside down and shake the ash out
- Empty the ash regularly for the best airflow and more efficient burning
A clean stove heats faster and burns more efficiently.

Why is corten steel better than regular steel for an outdoor fire pit?
Corten steel forms a protective rust patina that stops further corrosion. Regular steel keeps rusting until it is ruined. That is the whole difference.
Lillhälla is made from 3 mm corten steel. It handles rain, snow, frost and sun year-round without needing to be moved indoors, repainted or treated with any coating. The patina deepens over time and gives the fire pit a warm, living surface that belongs outdoors.
How much maintenance does Lillhälla require?
Basically nothing. As Lillhälla is made of corten steel, it can withstand being outside all year round. So the only maintenance you need to do is empty it of ash and clean the grill grate a little now and then.
Can I use charcoal in Lillhälla?
Yes, it works really well!
Can I use my outdoor fire pit all year round?
Yes. A corten steel fire pit like Lillhälla can stay outdoors and be used in all weather. Frost, rain and snow do no harm. The patina protects the steel.
Winter is actually the best time. Dark evenings, cold air, a fire. That is precisely the scenario a fire pit is made for. Keep in mind that the ground surface can be slippery, and embers on snow may melt down to the ground beneath. If children are nearby, a spark screen like Eldvakt adds extra safety.
Lillhälla comes in parts, can I also take it apart?
Yes you can. But rather see it as a movable fireplace in your garden. It is made of 3 mm corten steel and weighs almost 20 kilos, so you do not take with you on an excursion.
What safety rules apply when using Lillhälla?
Lillhälla is an open fire pit that gets very hot during use. Follow these rules for safe operation:
- Children and pets: Always supervise children and pets near the fire pit. All surfaces become hot
- Distance: Place Lillhälla at least 1 metre from combustible materials such as wooden furniture, hedges and fences
- Surface: Always place the fire pit on a non-combustible surface such as stone, concrete or paving slabs. Never directly on a wooden deck or lawn
- Fire extinguishing: Always keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher within reach
- Ash: Empty ash into a metal bucket with a lid – never into plastic or a waste bin. Ash can remain glowing for several days
- Indoors: Never use Lillhälla indoors or in enclosed spaces
Never leave a burning fire pit unattended and let it cool completely before moving it.
Where should I place Lillhälla?
Correct placement is important for both safety and enjoyment:
- Surface: Place Lillhälla on a flat, non-combustible surface – concrete slabs, paving stones or natural stone work well. Avoid wooden decks, lawns and gravel
- Distance: Keep at least 1 metre of clear space in all directions from combustible materials such as walls, fences, hedges and wooden furniture
- Wind protection: Position the fire pit so it is sheltered from strong wind, or use a spark screen. Wind can blow sparks and embers a long way
- Overhead cover: Never place Lillhälla under a roof, pergola or overhanging tree branches
Lillhälla is made from 3 mm corten steel and can stay outdoors year-round. During the first year, while the rust patina forms, it may leave rust marks on the surface beneath – avoid placing it directly on light-coloured natural stone if you want to prevent staining.
Can you grill on Lillhälla?
Yes! Lillhälla comes with a grill grate that sits on top of the fire pit. This makes it perfect for simple outdoor grilling:
- Light the fire and let it burn down to embers before placing the grill grate on top
- You can use both firewood and charcoal – charcoal gives more even heat for grilling
- The grate is made of stainless steel and withstands high temperatures
- Perfect for sausages, burgers, vegetables and other food grilled directly over embers
Clean the grill grate with a wire brush while it is still warm – food residue comes off most easily then. Lillhälla is fundamentally a fire pit, but the grill grate turns it into a practical combination of ambience fire and cooking.
What is the best way to start a fire in Lillhälla?
Starting a fire in Lillhälla is simple, but the right technique gives a better fire experience:
- Lighting: Start with newspaper or firelighters at the bottom, add kindling on top, then smaller pieces of firewood. Light from below
- Firewood: Use dry, split wood for best results. Birch, oak and beech produce fine embers. Avoid softwood if you do not want lots of sparks
- Charcoal: If you want even grilling heat, you can use charcoal instead. Light with firelighters or a charcoal starter
- Wood size: Lillhälla has a diameter of about 45 cm – split the wood into suitable pieces that fit without sticking out over the edge
Do not overfill the fire pit – give the fire room to breathe. A moderate amount of wood that burns well produces more heat and comfort than an overstuffed fire pit that smokes.
Do I need a spark screen for my fire pit?
It is not required, but it makes a difference in certain situations. A spark screen catches sparks that might otherwise land on decking, furniture or dry grass. If you burn softwood like spruce or pine, which sparks more, it is particularly worth using.
Eldvakt is a corten steel spark screen that fits Lillhälla. It is designed so you can still see the fire and feel the heat, but without sparks around your feet. If you have children or pets in the garden, it is a good accessory to have.
What can you cook on an outdoor fire pit?
More than you might think. Lillhälla works for most things. Grill directly on the grate. Fry in a cast iron pan. Cook in a pot. Roast marshmallows with the kids. Meat, fish, vegetables, it all turns out well. The best tip is to use embers rather than open flame. Embers give more even heat and better control. Patience always pays off over an open fire.
Eldvakt
Eldvakt →
Which functions has Eldvakt?
- Faster heating
Think of Eldvakt as the function that a lid has on a pot and how much faster the water heatens if you use a lid. - Protects the frame
Eldvakt's plate protects the frame against burns. Please note that burns on the wooden frame do not normally occur if you follow the instructions in the quick guide and if you keep the lid on the stove at all times when having a fire in the stove. - Protects against debris and leaves when heating the water

Is corten steel safe for cooking?
Yes. The protective rust layer on corten steel is stable and non-toxic. It does not flake and does not transfer harmful substances to food. Unlike painted grills where the coating can chip at high heat, corten steel is completely untreated.
On our products like Faster Greta and Lillhälla, the surfaces in direct contact with food are made from stainless steel or cast iron. The corten steel forms the body, the firebox, the structure. The food never touches the patina.
The first time you light a fire, simply burn off any protective grease by running a proper fire without food. Then you are ready to go.
How long does corten steel last outdoors?
A long time. Corten steel at 3 mm thickness, which we use in our products, has an expected lifespan well beyond 15 years in a Nordic climate. And that is a conservative estimate.
The material is built to stand outside. Unlike ordinary steel that rusts through, or wood that rots, the patina protects the steel beneath it. The longer it stands, the more stable the layer becomes. No winter covers needed, no indoor storage.
Want to see what it looks like in practice? Many of our earliest products are still standing outside with their owners. A little darker in tone, a little more character. But fully functional.
Does corten steel need maintenance or cleaning?
Barely. That is one of the great advantages of the material. The patina looks after itself, and you do not need to paint, oil or treat the surface.
If you want to clean it, water and a soft brush will do. Never use a pressure washer or chemical cleaners. They can damage the protective rust layer.
Compared to painted or powder-coated products that flake over the years, or wooden tubs that need oiling and can crack, corten steel is about as close to maintenance-free as outdoor products get. Less time on upkeep, more time by the fire.
Can corten steel stain the surface underneath?
Yes, especially during the first months before the patina has stabilised. Rainwater running along the surface can leave brown marks on light stone, concrete or wooden decking.
A few practical tips. Place the product on a surface that can handle a little colour, or put a slate tile or similar underneath. Avoid placing it directly against a white-painted wall. And if stains do appear on stone or concrete, they tend to fade over time from sun and rain.
Once the patina has settled, after six to twelve months, the staining reduces significantly. It is part of the process. Like much else with corten steel, nature sorts it out for you.
Why corten steel and not stainless or painted steel?
All three materials have their place, but corten steel suits products that will stand outside and age with dignity best.
Stainless steel does not rust but scratches easily and shows every fingerprint. It has its place in our products too, for example the inside of Bohemen. But as an exterior surface in a garden it can feel cold and industrial.
Painted or powder-coated steel looks fine in the shop but flakes over the years, especially around fire pits where the heat is high. Then you have a surface that needs upkeep or looks worn.
Corten steel goes the other way. The surface changes, but for the better. Each season adds a little more depth to the colour. Nothing to repair, nothing to hide. It is steel that works the way nature does.
What is corten steel and how does the patina work?
Corten steel is an alloy containing copper, chromium and nickel that forms a protective rust layer instead of rusting through. The same principle that turns copper roofs green over the years. Nature does the work.
When exposed to the weather, an oxidation process begins. During the first months the surface shifts from grey to orange and then to a deep, warm brown. After roughly six to twelve months the patina has stabilised. It holds firm, does not flake and protects the steel beneath.
If the surface is damaged, say by a scratch, the patina repairs itself. The same process restarts and mends the mark. It is a material that grows more beautiful from standing outdoors, not less.

Do I need a building permit for an outdoor fire pit?
No, not normally. A freestanding fire pit placed in the garden requires no building permit in Sweden. This applies to fire bowls, fire baskets and wood-fired ovens that are not permanently installed.
A permit may be needed if you build a masonry, permanent fire pit or a large outdoor installation. Always check with your municipality if you are unsure, especially in areas with a detailed development plan. Also keep in mind that fire bans may apply during dry periods, regardless of the type of fire pit you have.

How do I avoid bothering neighbours with smoke from my fire pit?
Dry wood is the most important thing. Damp wood produces heavy smoke and bad smell. Use wood with below 20 percent moisture. Do not burn large amounts at once. Keep the fire moderate and add wood gradually.
Wind direction matters. Do not light the fire when the wind blows straight towards your neighbour's house or outdoor area. Use hardwood like birch, beech or oak instead of softwood. Softwood produces more smoke and sparks. With the right wood and the right wind, an evening fire need not be a problem for anyone.
Ice bathing
Why choose a wood-fired bathtub over a hot tub?
If you prefer to take a bath with your partner, friend or alone, a wood-fired bathtub is the best choice since it has fast heating and requires less water than a hot tub, you don't have to plan far in advance when to take a bath. Little effort and the joy of being spontaneous allows you to use it often. Our customers also highlight the minimal maintenance of bathtubs and durability as crucial factors in choosing between a wood-fired bathtub or the bigger hot tub. It should also be added that our customers value the design as well! And that makes us very happy.
What are the health benefits of ice bathing?
Your body adapts to the cold, and over time most people notice they sleep deeper, recover faster and feel more alert in everyday life. Cold water activates the body's own processes. Blood circulation increases, inflammation is reduced and endorphins are released. It is no miracle cure, but there is a reason people have been bathing in cold water in the Nordics for hundreds of years.
How do I start ice bathing as a beginner?
Start quietly. Cold showers are a good beginning. Then short dips in cool water, perhaps 10 to 15 degrees, a minute or two. Lower the temperature a little at a time, week by week. Breathe calmly. Never bathe alone, and get out when your body tells you to. With a wood-fired bathtub like Bohemen you can heat the water first and then let it cool to the temperature that suits you. It gives you full control, at your own pace.
How long should you stay in an ice bath?
One to three minutes is plenty at first. Over time you might stay five, maybe ten. Longer than that rarely gives you more. Listen to your body. When you start shivering uncontrollably, it is time to get out. Afterwards, take it easy. Warm clothes, not a hot shower. Many people like to combine cold and warm, for example an ice bath followed by a hot soak in a Bohemen. The contrast is what makes the experience.
What temperature should the water be for ice bathing?
Most people aim for one to five degrees, but there is no magic number. If you are new to it, you can start at ten to fifteen degrees and work your way down. Research shows that the body responds already below fifteen degrees. The important thing is not reaching a certain temperature but challenging yourself just enough. With a Bohemen outdoor bathtub you control the temperature yourself. Heat it up, let it cool, and feel what works for you.
Cold bathing
What is the difference between a wood-fired and an electric hot tub?
A wood-fired bathtub like Bohemen is heated with real fire. You need no electrical connection, no fixed installation. Place it where you want it, fill with water, and light the fire. Heating takes roughly two hours. An electric hot tub requires power, installation and has higher running costs. But above all, it lacks what makes the outdoor bath an experience: the fire, the scent, the feeling that everything takes the time it takes.

A comfortable bathing temperature is about 40 degrees. It's a good idea to use the stick for Bohemen when stirring the tub.

Can I use charcoal in Lillhälla?
Yes, it works really well!
About wood burning
What is the best wood to burn outdoors?
Birch is the most versatile firewood. It burns evenly with good heat and works for everything. Beech and oak give long-lasting embers, good for cooking. Alder gives a mild smoky flavour, nice in a baking oven like Faster Greta. Avoid softwood like spruce and pine for cooking. It creates soot and bitter taste. The most important thing, regardless of wood type, is that the wood is properly dried. Below 20 percent moisture. Dry wood gives more heat and less smoke.
What are the rules for outdoor fires in Sweden?
During dry periods, fire bans may apply, issued by the county administrative board or municipality. Even without a ban, you are always responsible for fire safety. On private land it is generally permitted to use wood-fired products like Lillhälla and Faster Greta all year round. But always check local regulations and SMHI fire risk forecasts before lighting the fire. It takes a minute and saves you worry.
How do I burn with as little smoke as possible?
Dry wood is the most important thing. Below 20 percent moisture. Moisture is the main cause of smoke. Light the fire from the top, it gives cleaner combustion. Make sure there is enough air. Do not overfill the firebox. Products like Lillhälla and Faster Greta are designed with efficient airflow that keeps smoke down when used properly. But the foundation is always the same: dry wood and enough air.
Outdoor pizza oven
How long does it take to heat a wood-fired pizza oven?
In the Faster Greta it takes 45 to 60 minutes to reach pizza temperature, 300 to 400 degrees. It depends on the type of wood, the amount and the outdoor temperature.
Start with kindling and firelighters. Build the fire gradually. Use dry birch or beech for the best results. You know the oven is ready when the stones in the oven section have turned light grey. That means they have stored enough heat to bake pizza in two to four minutes.

Wood-fired bathtub
What is the difference between a wood-fired and an electric hot tub?
A wood-fired bathtub like Bohemen is heated with real fire. You need no electrical connection, no fixed installation. Place it where you want it, fill with water, and light the fire. Heating takes roughly two hours. An electric hot tub requires power, installation and has higher running costs. But above all, it lacks what makes the outdoor bath an experience: the fire, the scent, the feeling that everything takes the time it takes.
